What Am I Fighting For?

Genesis 1:26-27

Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.” 27 So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them;  male and female he created them. 28 God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and SUBDUE it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.” And the 7th day God rested and said it was good...

Genesis 3: 13-15

Then the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.” 14 So the Lord God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, “Cursed are you above all livestock and all wild animals! You will crawl on your belly and you will eat dust all the days of your life. 15 And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.”

These passages capture the grand arc of a spiritual "custody battle" for the Earth, moving from the initial deception in Eden to the ongoing mandate for believers to reclaim lost ground.

The Conflict of Sovereignty

After the fall in Eden, the Lord God questioned the woman. She admitted, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.” This sparked a divine decree: God cursed the serpent to crawl in the dust and declared a perpetual war between the serpent’s seed and the woman’s offspring. He promised a coming Savior who would crush the serpent’s head, even as the serpent struck His heel.

The Great Counterfeit

At its core, this is a battle for dominion. Driven by the delusion that he is God, Satan seeks a kingdom to rule and subjects to command. Because he lacks the power to create, he is a master counterfeiter, mimicking God’s patterns to lure humanity into his camp. In this cosmic conflict, he views us as pawns; we are the subjects of a custody battle over the Earth. The choice is ours: remain orphans under a liar or return to our true Father as adopted heirs.

Reclaiming the Territory

From Heaven’s perspective, the goal is clear: The Glory of the Lord must fill the Earth as the waters cover the sea. Through His death and resurrection, Jesus stripped the enemy of his power, took "captivity captive," and reclaimed the keys to death and hell. Our mission is to walk in that same authority. We are called to resume the original assignment given to Adam and Eve: to rule, subdue, and restore.

The Process: Inch by Inch

Victory is rarely an overnight event. It begins within the heart of the individual and expands outward.

Just as the Israelites were granted the Promised Land but had to fight for every acre, our progress often happens “little by little.” It requires persistence. You must continue to drive out the "enemies" in your own life—habits, lies, or spiritual strongholds—because any territory left surrendered to the deceiver will eventually become a thorn in your side and a constant source of irritation.

The following "manual" organizes the theology of spiritual warfare into a battle strategy. It moves from the legal basis of our authority to the practical application of the Armor and the mechanics of deliverance.

I. The Legal Basis of Authority

The battle for Earth is a "custody battle" over souls. While the enemy acts as a counterfeiter and a squatter, his power was legally broken by Jesus Christ.

  • The Prince Has No Claim: In John 14, Jesus declares that the "ruler of this world" has no claim on Him—nothing in Jesus belongs to the enemy. If we are IN CHRIST and He is IN US, the enemy has no claim. Any argument against this is illegal. However, legal rights can come through lack of submission to the Lord, unforgiveness or sin.

  • Delegated Power: In Luke 10, Jesus grants this same authority to us. We are empowered to "trample on snakes and scorpions" and overcome all the power of the enemy. Loophole: the amount of authority the enemy acknowledges is equal to the amount of surrender to Jesus. We have no authority apart from JESUS.

  • The Goal of Peace: This authority isn't for chaos; it is so we may possess and demand a peace "not as the world gives." We are commanded to stop allowing ourselves to be agitated, fearful, or intimidated as we subdue the kingdom of darkness and bring the gospel of peace. [Romans 5:1-2;9-11] The Lord destroys the works of the devil that cause turmoil and destruction in the lives of the saved and unsaved.

  • Enforcing the Kingdom of God on Earth. As Sons and Daughters, we are commissioned to enforce the mandate given to Adam and Eve in the garden. We are to rule and subdue so that the Glory of the Lord covers the Earth as the waters cover the seas. We are to represent and enforce the Kingdom of God.

II. The Strategy: The

Armor of God

Victory requires being "empowered through union with Him." Because we wrestle against supernatural "forces" rather than people, we must wear the supernatural armor of a spiritual soldier (Ephesians 6):

Piece of Armor

Spiritual Function

Purpose

Belt of Truth

Covers the "loins" (vulnerable areas).

Tightening the belt of Truth protects our weakest spots from deception.

Breastplate of Righteousness

Integrity and moral rectitude.

Protects the heart and vital organs; ensures right standing with God.

Gospel Shoes

Firm-footed stability and readiness.

Keeps us from being "unsettled" by the accusations of the enemy.

Shield of Faith

Quenching flaming missiles.

Connects us to God's promises; stops darts sent to erode our belief.

Helmet of Salvation

Protection of the mind/decision center.

Guards the revelation of what Christ has redeemed. Where the mind leads, the man follows.

Sword of the Spirit

The living Word of God.

The offensive weapon used to demolish arguments that exalt themselves against God.

III. The Mechanics of Deliverance

A common question is: Can a Christian be possessed? If the Holy Spirit inhabits your spirit, an evil spirit cannot cohabitate there. However, your soul (mind, will, and emotions) can be tormented, oppressed or "illegally under seige" like territory. The strategy to evict these things is to simply go through the process of surrendering to the Lordship of Christ, forgive [if needed], repent from any known sin, and then rebuke, revoke and evict - Follow this by inviting Holy Spirit to again occupy the land the enemy tried to oppress and take. Matthew 16:19 speaks of Binding and Losing with the Keys to the Kingdom of Heaven. With these keys, we bind our mind, will and emotions to Christ's and we loose them from any attack from the enemy. Jesus took keys of death, hell and the grave... and He took captivity captive... so that we could operate and use them in our mission.

1. The Necessity of Holy Spirit Occupation

We do not cast spirits out of unbelievers. If a house is swept clean but not filled with the Holy Spirit, seven worse spirits return. If you cannot occupy the land with Good, do not conquer it. Deliverance is only sustainable when the individual invites the Holy Spirit to occupy the vacated space. Believers can be attacked by ungodly thoughts or emotions which, when received, gives legal right for oppression; but following the guidelines above and strategies below, the Truth will bring freedom.

2. Legal Rights and Agreement

The enemy is a "legalist." He stays where he has a legal right to be.

  • Agreement: Our will is our primary control. If a person does not agree to be free, the process stalls.

  • Spiritual Contracts: We give the devil "legal rights" when we align with his characteristics (unforgiveness, pride, or willful sin) and his words (lies).

3. Identifying the Bondage: Prisoners vs. Captives

Isaiah 61 distinguishes between two types of bondage. To set someone free, you must discern their status:

  • The Prisoner (The Guilty): Held by a "court order" due to sin or unforgiveness. They require repentance and confession to satisfy the Judge and remove the enemy's legal right to torment.

  • The Captive (The Deceived): Held by lies and fractured identity. They require knowledge of the Truth to be set free. Their antidote is a renewed mind.

IV. The Path to Freedom: Little by Little

Possessing your divine purpose is like the Israelites taking the Promised Land—it happens in increments.

  • Resistance is a Sign: The closer you get to your purpose, the more resistance you will feel. The chariots of Pharaoh chased the Israelites as they were leaving captivity and entering into the Promised Land. Jesus was tempted by the devil right after He was baptized into ministry. We are no different.

  • The Rule of Displacement: The measure of freedom in our minds is equal to the amount of Truth we use to replace lies. Same with our emotions. The voice we heed and believe is the voice in control. Faith in what the enemy says is just as powerful as faith in what God says. Hence the garden argument, "Did God really say?"

  • The Deliverer's Posture: When helping others, you must be in a place of personal forgiveness and right standing. Evil spirits are lawless; they only respect authority that is confident, without doubt, and submitted to God. See the seven sons of Sceva. (Acts 19:16)

The Golden Rule of Warfare: "Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you." (James 4:7). Resistance without submission is futile; submission to God makes resistance powerful and effective.

To help a Captive dismantle the lies of the enemy, the "Sword of the Spirit" must be used precisely. Below is a Scriptural Confession Guide designed to replace specific deceptions with the Truth of God's Word.

These are not just "positive affirmations"; they are legal declarations used to occupy the territory of the mind.

⚔️ The Sword of the Spirit: Confession Guide

1. Replacing the Lie of Rejection and Identity

  • The Lie: "I am unwanted, an orphan, unloved, disqualified and discarded because of my past."

  • The Truth (Ephesians 1:4-5, John 1:12):

"I am not an orphan. I have been chosen in Christ before the foundation of the world. I am adopted into God’s family and have been given the legal right to be called a child of God. I am accepted in the Beloved."

2. Replacing the Lie of Condemnation and Disqualification

  • The Lie: "God is angry with me; I am still a prisoner to my old mistakes. I will never measure up."

  • The Truth (Romans 8:1, 2 Cor 5:17):

"There is now no condemnation for me because I am in Christ Jesus. My old life has passed away; I am a new creation. The Judge has cleared my record, and the accuser has no legal standing against me.The blood of Jesus cancelled the written code and I am now the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus."

3. Replacing the Lie of Powerlessness and Victomhood

  • The Lie: "I am a victim of my circumstances and the enemy is too strong for me."

  • The Truth (Luke 10:19, 2 Tim 1:7, Romans 8:31-32, 37):

"I have been given authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy. God has not given me a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind. Nothing shall by any means harm me. If God Is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all - how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things? No, In all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us."

4. Replacing the Lie of Defeat

  • The Lie: "I will never change; this 'thorn' will always be in my side. I have no control over my failures and temptations."

  • The Truth (Philippians 1:6, Deuteronomy 7:22):

"He who began a good work in me will bring it to completion. The Lord is driving out my enemies 'little by little.' I am gaining territory every day as I submit to Him. I will not be conformed to the image of this world but will be transformed by the renewing of my mind, that by testing I may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect."

🛡️ How to "Tighten the Belt" (Practical Application)

When the enemy sends a "flaming missile" (a thought of fear, doubt, or shame), use this three-step process to maintain your territory:

  1. Halt the Thought: "We are destroying sophisticated arguments and every exalted and proud thing that sets Itself up against the true knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought and purpose captive to the obedience of Christ" (2 Cor 10:5). Acknowledge the thought but do not "own" it. Command it to line up with the Word of God.

  2. Expose the Source: Ask, "Does this thought belong to the Counterfeiter or my Father?" If it produces fear, intimidation, condemnation, hopelessness, or accusation - it is the enemy.

  3. Wield the Sword: Speak the specific Truth out loud. The enemy must flee when he encounters the Word of God used in the authority of Jesus' name.

Keep in mind that a territory whose inhabitants are free in Christ will not be able to be controlled by enemy princes, powers or rulers in high places. When we remove the agreement and participation of the people from the powers of darkness, the enemy has no means to control. Authority in the earth has been given unto mankind. When people

disengage from the deceptions of the enemy and commit to the truth of God, there is no one to use to occupy and control territory. We have the keys. Time to use them.

📖 Closing Prayer for the Warrior

"Father, I fully submit to you and I thank You that the Prince of this world has no claim on me. I put on the Helmet of Salvation to safeguard my thoughts and the Breastplate of Righteousness to protect my heart. I wield the sword of the Spirit, the Truth of the Word of God and command everything in my life to be obedient to it. I strengthen my vulnerable areas with the belt of Truth and disarm every fiery missile launched at me with the shield of Faith. I stand firm in shoes of the gospel of Peace. I choose friendship with God and reject friendship with the world’s systems. Help me to occupy the land you have given me to conquer this day. In Jesus' Name, Amen."
